Risk of second cancers

  • Unilateral retinoblastoma – 2%
  • Bilateral retinoblastoma – 30%

Prevention

  • Sun protection as noted below
  • Minimize radiation example CT scan, X ray.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Avoid being around second hand smoke.
  • Physical examination every year by pediatrician
  • We will also refer you to a cancer surveillance clinic if you are at high risk.

Eye protection

  • Polycarbonate glasses for protection
  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection when in bright sunlight.
  • Wear protective eyewear for sports or when using power equipment or hazardous chemicals.
  • Avoid substances that can injure your eye such as sharp toys and fireworks.
  • Never play with fireworks or sparklers of any kind to avoid accidental injury.

Outdoor precautions

Children and teens should be encouraged to fit some outdoor physical activity into their daily routine. Remember to protect children from sunburn when the skin is exposed to the sun even on cloudy or hazy days.

  • Use cover-up clothing and sunscreen with a high SPF (35 or higher).
  • Sand, snow, concrete, water and high altitudes all increase the risk of sun damage. Take extra caution to protect your skin in these environments.
  • Discourage your child from tanning; avoid tanning booths.
  • Avoid outdoor activities from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. when sun rays are most intense.
  • Plan outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon hours.
  • Re-apply sunscreen every few hours while outside, especially when swimming.
