School nurses provide care and health education
Kids have trouble learning in school without optimal physical, mental and emotional health. That’s why school nurses from Children’s Wisconsin work every day to lead and coordinate efforts that keep kids healthy, safe and ready to learn. Our goal is to improve the health and academic outcomes of all students. We begin by assessing the student’s needs. The school nurses then apply a collaborative approach to formulate goals and understand how to best meet the identified needs by working with families, medical providers, social workers, mental and behavioral health specialists and school support staff.
Children’s school nurses function in a pivotal role that bridges health care and education. They are community leaders who bring knowledge of social environments and health systems to mitigate, prepare, and respond to student and community needs and to promote better health outcomes. Their specialized practice advances the wellbeing, academic success, and lifelong health and achievement of students. Children’s school nurses currently care for more than 4,000 students at 11 Milwaukee schools.
