Providing Your Child Care Through an Econsult

What is an eConsult?

  • An eConsult lets your provider ask a Children’s Wisconsin specialist about your child’s care.
  • It is a way to get our specialists’ thoughts.
  • It may limit the need for a referral for an in-person visit.

Why would my child need an eConsult?

  • Your child’s provider may need help to manage or treat your child’s need.
  • An eConsult lets the specialist look at your child’s medical record and answer a question or give advice.
  • Your child can get the right care at the right time. This can save you travel time and get to a care plan quickly.

What is the cost and does insurance cover it?

  • The cost is less than an in-person visit.
  • eConsults will be billed to your insurance. What you pay will depend on your benefits, coinsurance, copay or deductible.
  • If you ask, our financial counselors will do their best to provide an estimate of the cost of services. They can be reached at (414) 266-5700. Financial assistance is available to families based on need. To learn more, visit childrenswi.org/financialassistance.

What if my child needs to be seen by the specialty doctor after an eConsult?

  • Your provider will talk to you about the next steps if the specialists would like to see your child in person.
  • You will not be billed for the eConsult if you need to see a specialist in person or by video.

How do I know if an eConsult is what my child needs?

  • Before your provider starts an eConsult, they will talk to you.
  • If you agree, they will make note of it in your child’s medical record. Your provider can then start an eConsult.
