Human Research Protection Program

The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is an institution-wide program composed of the Institutional Review Board, HRPP Staff, and other collaborating groups who are responsible for protecting human subjects participating in research conducted at Children's Wisconsin.

Human subject protection is a system of ethical principles, local institutional policies, departments, and safety committees, along with state and Federal laws and oversight agencies, that work together to safeguard the rights, welfare, and privacy of humans participating in research.

Institutional Review Board

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is an ethical oversight committee who has the authority to review, approve, modify, or disapprove research protocols submitted by appropriate staff and student investigators. The IRB also assists external institutions for studies submitted for reliance.

In addition to being charged with the above, the IRB also ensures that all studies comply with the ethical principles contained in the Belmont Report, such as respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. The primary responsibility of the IRB is to ensure the rights, welfare, and privacy of human subjects are protected during their participation in research.

The Children's Wisconsin Institutional Review Board is made up of two committees, each meeting once a month. These boards are diverse in their membership, made up of physicians and scientists from a variety of specialty areas, non-scientists, and community representatives.
