The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children’s Wisconsin are seeking a visionary, innovative and scholarly leader to serve as Chief of Pediatric Complex Care in the Department of Pediatrics. Primary Functions and Responsibilities

  • Recruit, mentor and retain outstanding faculty within the specialty and recruit diverse staff
  • Ensure the Complex Care Program maintains the partnership with Wisconsin Medicaid, which has resulted in the financial sustainability of our program
  • Support and enhance research programs in the section and oversee administration of grants
  • Foster an environment that enriches the educational programs for a variety of learners including medical students, residents, fellows and nurse practitioners
  • Monitor fiscal management issues (e.g., budget development, expenditures, etc.)
  • Produce scholarship, be academically productive and contribute to journals in related fields
  • Bring your own clinical expertise in pediatric complex care to enhance the practice
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and resources
  • Bridge the division’s clinical, training and research opportunities and discoveries directly to the community
  • Ensure an atmosphere of support and development that is safe, just and equitable for faculty, staff, trainees, patients and research participants, especially for those with limited access to care, education and research representation
  • Build relationships within and outside the department and Medical College to increase the engagement of the faculty and advocate for Pediatric Complex Care
  • Organize, administer and continuously review and analyze all components of the division
  • Deliver on clinical objectives with particular attention to patient access and engagement of all faculty and staff
  • Partner with community organizations and foster an attitude of community service
  • Actively participate in donor cultivation and philanthropic stewardship and philanthropy
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and institutional policies

Position Responsibilities

The Division Chief reports to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics (DOP) and Pediatrician-in-Chief. The Division Chief will work in partnership with leadership within the DOP and the leadership of Children’s Wisconsin, MCW and Children’s Specialty Group (CSG) to assist in the operationalization of clinical programs, workforce planning, quality measurement and reporting and health network-based strategies. Pediatric Complex Care faculty and staff that are employed by Children’s Wisconsin and MCW directly report to the Chief.

Essential Functions

  1. Demonstrate, understand and support the mission, vision and values of MCW and the DOP
  2. Work collaboratively with other leaders and colleagues to develop and advance the goals of the Division, Department and MCW
  3. Lead growth activities in all aspects of clinical, research (including basic, clinical, translational and clinical trials), community engagement and teaching programs in the Division
  4. Work collaboratively with Children’s Specialty Group, Children’s Wisconsin and MCW leadership to establish and grow a vibrant divisional component of the health system-wide practice
  5. Recruit, retain and develop faculty and staff
  6. Encourage and support diversity among the division constituents, creating an environment of professionalism, collegiality and respect.
  7. Increase national visibility for the division and department through enhanced clinical, research and academic achievement.
  8. Demonstrate professionalism, acting with integrity and inspiring trust and respect
  9. Lead well developed interprofessional care teams and look for opportunities for interprofessional education for MCW learners at all levels
  10. Develop strong regional relationships with a referral network of physicians and interprofessional colleagues to impact care delivered throughout the region
  11. Oversee high-quality education programs, seminars and conferences for medical students, residents, fellows, employed faculty, community-based providers and referring physicians
  12. Represent the Medical College of Wisconsin in regional and national organizations and societies and participate in national meetings, societies and associations

Administrative/Leadership Roles and Values of Division Chiefs in the MCW Department of Pediatrics

This Chief will maintain an open, collaborative atmosphere that empowers both faculty and staff to perform at their best and strongly encourages innovation, accountability and honest feedback at all levels. The Chief will balance the missions of clinical practice, research, education, and community engagement and work diligently to allocate resources to each activity in such a manner to ensure success in each area.

  1. Collaborate with the Department of Pediatrics Chair and Chief Department Administrator to oversee fiscal affairs of the division, efficient resource utilization and to establish workforce plans for growth of the division, considering the balance of clinical practice, education and research
  2. Develop a yearly budget in collaboration with the Division Administrator and central finance team, which will require Chair approval
  3. Continuously improve the productivity of the clinical practice while enhancing the quality, safety and efficiency of the patient experience
  4. Work with the Department Chair and CSG leadership to develop productivity and quality standards and metrics, and work with faculty and the administrative team to improve clinical efficiencies and enhance productivity
  5. Collaborate with the Department Chair, Vice Chairs and Chairs of other collaborating departments to recruit faculty of high quality and excellent potential for unique contributions to the division and to MCW in a manner that exemplifies the best practices for diversity and EOA/AA guidelines, recruiting faculty from groups under-represented in Medicine whenever possible
  6. Work with the Department Chair and designated staff to support departmental fundraising efforts, such as participation in outreach events to grateful patients, alumni and community leaders, engaging faculty in these efforts and work with departmental leadership and staff to develop fundraising targets and strategies
  7. Assist the Chair and Provost with recruitment of key Division Chiefs and other important posts at MCW

Clinical Role of the Division Chiefs in the MCW Department of Pediatrics

  • Must lead by example and be a clinician of the highest quality
  • Oversee and direct the Division to maximize the quality of patient care, clinical outcomes, patient safety and available scope of services.
  • Assure that the Division treats all patients of the organization without regard to financial resources or individual characteristics, including, but not limited to race, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, gender, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, disability or veteran status.
  • Develop a wide and comprehensive referral network to impact how care is delivered throughout the region.
  • Coordinate program components with a focus on delivering integrated patient-centered care.
  • Develop innovative clinical programs in subspecialty areas ranging from the bedside to population-based prevention and screening.
  • Develop and oversee quality and service improvement efforts including clinical outcomes, specific treatment

Teaching/Research Roles of the Division Chiefs in the MCW Department of Pediatrics

  • Serve as an academic role model for faculty and trainees.
  • Oversee the research productivity of faculty and trainees and establish a culture of inquisitiveness, collaboration, participation fiscal responsibility, interprofessional care and multidisciplinary approaches.
  • Assure maintenance of ACGME accreditation of residency and fellowship training programs in Pediatric Medicine at MCW Affiliated Hospitals (MCWAH).
  • Increase the amount and quality of clinical and translational research training available to trainees to establish a pipeline of research-trained physician investigators for eventual faculty recruitment.
  • Participate and assign faculty to participate in undergraduate and graduate medical education programs at MCW, as well as CME and graduate school programs as appropriate
  • Embrace all changes mandated by ACGME and RRC, as well as innovative curriculum changes in our medical school and all other new programs developed by our President and Provost
  • Promote interdepartmental collaborations and encourage cross-disciplinary efforts in research, training and education
  • Facilitate publication productivity and presentations at national meetings by all key faculty members
  • Encourage and facilitate applications for extramural and intramural research funding by faculty and trainees
  • Promote faculty and trainee participation in regional and national specialty organizations

Faculty and Staff Development Roles of Division Chiefs in the MCW Department of Pediatrics

  • Serve as a role model for faculty, staff, students and trainees in terms of professionalism, commitment to excellence, faculty development and enhancing diversity and inclusion
  • Collaborate with Department Chair and with MCW Associate Dean for Faculty Development to establish a clear plan for the development of all faculty members in the division, including onboarding and orientation of all new faculty and staff
  • Take responsibility for holding faculty and staff accountable for contractual agreements and adherence to Department, CSG, MCW and CW policies
  • Conduct an annual review of all faculty members in the Division using the EMERGE system, assessing performance in all missions of the division
  • Partner with the Division Administrator to hold annual performance reviews of all staff members
  • Assure that annual goal setting and performance evaluation assessments are documented in EMERGE (our online engagement and assessment tool) as required by the institution
  • While the intent is for all these activities to occur in a highly positively reinforced setting incentivizing faculty autonomy and creativity, there may be occasional need for disciplinary action, contract non-renewal or even termination, for which Division Chief will be responsible in collaboration with the Department Chair and Chief Administrator

Candidate Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for the mission and vision of MCW Department of Pediatrics and Division of Pediatric Complex Care and will have a strong track record of scholarship and leadership. In addition, candidates should possess the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of an MD, MD/PhD, DO or foreign medical equivalent
  • Successful completion of a pediatric residency program
  • Board Certified in Pediatrics
  • Eligible for full unrestricted licensure to practice in the state of Wisconsin
  • Ability to foster a highly collaborative academic environment
  • Experience in medical education/administration, strong evidence of administrative ability, including, but not limited to emotional intelligence, leadership and organizational skills

About Children’s Wisconsin and The Medical College of Wisconsin

MCW has approximately 1,600 full-time and part-time faculty and approximately 3,445 full-time employees, making it one of the largest health care employers in Wisconsin. Childrenswi.org | A 304-bed hospital dedicated solely to the care of children, Children’s Wisconsin is one of the top-ranked pediatric hospitals in the country. It offers a Level I trauma center, a Level I surgery center, a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a 72-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. It is the primary pediatric hospital for all of the children of Southeast Wisconsin and the main referral center for children living in much of Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. The hospital also receives patients from across the country and around the world for specific subspecialty care.

The Children's Wisconsin facilities include a day surgery area, preoperative clinic, two PACU areas with 24 beds, two hybrid cath labs, 18 operative suites and three special procedure rooms. Anesthesia services are routinely provided in several additional locations including interventional radiology, CT, MRI, ERCP and radiation therapy. The Jane B Pettit Pain and Palliative Care Center accommodates over 1,500 outpatient visits annually, as well as supporting the Acute Pain Service faculty. The nearby Surgicenter of Greater Milwaukee includes a six-room operative suite with associated day surgery and PACU areas.
