Child well-being and community health and education student internship opportunities

Children’s Wisconsin’s Child Well-Being and Community Health and Education teams provide services throughout much of the state of Wisconsin. Our goal is to provide high-quality educational experiences in the fields of social work, community health, public health, maternal and child health, early childhood, parent education and advocacy.

Based on program availability, internships can be for fall, spring, and/or summer. While internships are available for both bachelor’s and master’s level students, some internship opportunities may require a master’s level and/or have a two semester requirement. All internships are unpaid, with the exception of a few master’s degree placements in the Child Welfare Program.

A sample of potential program placements

A group of early childhood development programs that provide supportive services in the family’s home, a community location, or the office. These services support the strengthening of nurturing parent-child relationships, routine screening for child development and maternal depression, and education of healthy childhood growth and development. Internships opportunities are available in Milwaukee, Janesville, Madison, Black River Falls, Eau Claire, Marshfield, Stevens Point, Wausau, Merrill, Antigo and Rhinelander.
Children’s provides child well-being services to help children live in a safe and nurturing environment. Services are provided to parents needing education and guidance to improve their parenting skills so their children can remain with them. Services are also provided to children who are placed with foster families until they can return home or become part of an adoptive family. Both bachelor’s and master’s social work internships are available in Milwaukee.
The mission of the Institute for Child and Family Well-being is to improve the lives of children and families with complex challenges by implementing effective programs, conducting cutting-edge research, engaging communities and promoting systems change. Master’s in public health or social work and two semester minimum required.
The community health & education department addresses the broad health and wellness issues in the community that affect the children we serve. We believe in preparing children for life's challenges by equipping them with a wide range of knowledge and skills, resources and services consistent with Children's commitment to the health and well-being of children and vision of having the healthiest children in the nation. Internships are available in Milwaukee and Neenah for a variety of community health and public health initiatives.
Child advocacy and protective services (CAPS) provides comprehensive services, including expert medical evaluations, for children where there are concerns for child maltreatment. CAPS utilizes evidence-based and trauma- informed strategies to minimize trauma and break the cycle of abuse. Internships focused on advocacy for children impacted by abuse or neglect are available in Eau Claire.

Internship openings and availability are limited, subject to change, and will be filled through a competitive process. Student interns must meet Children’s healthcare requirements (including an annual flu vaccination) and background check requirements (including a criminal history and child protective services check).
