Overview
Dr. Malin’s research focuses on neonatal intensive care, parental experiences, and health policy. Her work explores neonatal and parental stress, including the impact of hospitalization on families, parental uncertainty, and post-traumatic stress. She examines health policies such as pandemic visitor restrictions, mandatory reporting for substance-affected mother-infant dyads, and home nasogastric tube feeding programs. Additionally, her research addresses innovations in neonatal care, including quality improvement initiatives, stress research in preterm infants, and the epigenetic effects of early toxic stress in the NICU. She also investigates workforce equity, specifically pay disparities among nursing faculty educators.
Area of expertise: Toxic stress in premature infants and their families with a specific focus on perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder in parents after their infant’s discharge from the NICU; exploring the relationships among infant and parent stress in the NICU and social structures with the goal of laying a foundation for future nursing intervention development; research and clinical work is patient oriented with a goal of improving long-term health and development of premature infants and their families.
