Children’s infectious disease specialists work tirelessly to build a stronger and more informed medical community in the field of infectious disease. Much of our work is done with hospitalized patients, however, we see patients in our out-patient clinic upon referral from primary or specialty care providers.

• Primary or specialty medical providers can refer patients to be evaluated by a specialist directly by calling the Infectious Disease office at (414) 337-7070.
• Patients, families, medical and social service providers can call our HIV Program directly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling the Children's operator at (414) 266-2000 and asking to speak with the HIV Program staff on call.

The Lori Haker Visiting Professorship in Infectious Disease is a two-day educational event each spring and attracts nationally and internationally known experts in pediatric infectious disease. The Pediatric Infectious Disease Division has coordinated this annual event since 1972.

Children’s started the HIV Treater's Meeting, a state-wide educational meeting for pediatric and adult providers that care for patients with HIV over 10 years ago. The Treater’s meeting is an opportunity for providers throughout Wisconsin to discuss and learn from clinical situations at other facilities. The meeting, based at Children's and the Medical College of Wisconsin, is linked via videoconferencing to four additional sites.

We have since transitioned the management of this meeting to the Midwest AIDS Education and Training Center (MAETC). Providers at Children’s and the Medical College of Wisconsin still serve on the advisory board, and Dr. Peter Havens facilitates the monthly Treater's Meetings.

We treat patients with rabies living in Wisconsin and consult with providers caring for patients with rabies nationally and internationally. The Rabies Registry maintains statistics on patients with rabies and occurrence rates within the state. Providers can submit information about their patients.

Children’s Wisconsin is committed to improving outcomes for children with infectious diseases. Our current research efforts include:

• HIV treatment regimens – exploring the best and safest ways to treat children with HIV
• Virus clearance from the central nervous system – the use of vasoactive drugs in bacterial meningitis to decrease CNS damage
• Rapid diagnosis of respiratory viral agents

Dr. Michael J Chusid

Dr. Chusid has been a member of the Pediatric Infectious Disease group for over 30 years. He is board certified in Pediatrics, Allergy & Immunology and Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Dr. Chusid is the medical director of the Infection Control Program at Children’s. His involvement at the Medical College of Wisconsin includes positions as the chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Disease, professor in the Department of Pediatrics and associate chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Chusid’s interests include neurologic infections, bone infections, congenital infections, infections in children with immune deficiency and infections in children after international adoption.

Dr. Peter L. Havens

Dr. Havens has been a member of the Pediatric Infectious Disease group for over 25 years. He is board certified in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Pediatric Critical Care.

Dr. Havens has been a member the Pediatric Antiretroviral Therapy Writing Committee since 2000 and Co-Chair since 2003. This group publishes the annual “Guidelines for the Use of Antiretroviral Agents in Pediatric HIV Infection;” these guidelines provide care recommendations and benchmarks for the treatment of all children living with HIV throughout the United States.

Dr. Kelly Henrickson

Dr. Henrickson has been a member of the Pediatric Infectious Disease group for over 20 years. He is board certified in Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Henrickson is a world renowned expert in the area of respiratory virus identification and detection. Dr. Henrickson’s lab developed a test that could diagnose influenza as well as identify the type and subtype of the virus. His test was critically utilized during the 2009 H1N1 influenza outbreak as it allowed for early detection and treatment for patients with H1N1.

Dr. Rodney E. Willoughby

Dr. Willoughby has been a member of the Pediatric Infectious Disease group since 2005. He is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Willoughby travels the world treating children and educating their providers about infectious disease, particularly central nervous system infections. He currently conducts research in antibiotic cycling, antimicrobial resistance, cerebral palsy, cytokines, probiotics, rabies and central nervous system infections.
