Epilepsy quality and outcomes

Our volumes and outcomes data helps families and referring providers make the most informed health care decisions for the benefit of their children and patients.

Epilepsy volumes

Patients are admitted to our epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) where we perform electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring and evaluations. At Children's Wisconsin approximately 2,000 patients receive standard EEG evaluations and 1,000 patients receive long-term video-EEG monitoring (LTM) annually. 95% of standard EEG and long-term video-EEG monitoring reports are evaluated and recorded within 5 days so that patients receive their evaluations in a timely manner. Learn more about EEG monitoring.

Our neurosurgeons perform more than 50 epilepsy surgeries each year.  Learn more about our epilepsy surgical treatment options

Temporal lobe epilepsy surgery

The graph below shows outcomes of patients who underwent temporal lobe epilepsy surgery and achieved Engel class I (seizure-free) or II (rare disabling seizures) outcomes after 12 months. Patient outcomes for 2019 will be available at the end of 2020.

Extratemporal lobe epilepsy surgery

Success rates for extratemporal lobe epilepsy surgery are generally lower than temporal lobe epilepsy surgery.

The graph below shows outcomes of patients who underwent extra temporal lobe epilepsy surgery and achieved Engel class I (seizure-free) or II (rare disabling seizures) outcomes after 12 months. Patient outcomes for 2019 will be available at the end of 2020.

Hemispherectomy surgery

The graph below shows outcomes of patients who underwent hemispherectomy surgery and achieved Engel class I (seizure-free) or II (rare disabling seizures) outcomes after 12 months. Patient outcomes for 2019 will be available at the end of 2020.
