There are 13 advanced practice providers (APPs) administering pediatric orthopedic care at Children’s Wisconsin. Among this group of highly skilled professionals is Allison Duey-Holtz, MSN, CPNP-PC, a nurse practitioner (NP) who’s been at Children’s Wisconsin for nearly two decades. Thanks to APPs like Duey-Holtz, our patients receive more personalized care.

Duey-Holtz takes a patient-centered approach with all the patients she sees. “There are some patients with common spinal conditions or fractures who I will see, manage and care for on my own,” Duey-Holtz said. For kids with more complex, chronic conditions or kids requiring surgical intervention, a team-based approach is taken. Duey-Holtz and orthopedic surgeon, J. Channing Tassone, MD, along with their other healthcare team members, work together to provide the best and safest care as well as care coordination, support and wraparound care through patients’ journeys. For example, if surgery is required, Duey-Holtz’s role in the perioperative process includes providing pre- and postoperative care, while Dr. Tassone performs the surgery and provides long-term care.

Background
After earning her degree as a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Duey-Holtz spent two years specializing in pediatric orthopedics at Children's Medical Center Dallas. From there she spent three years in primary care in Appleton with Thedacare Pediatrics. In 2004, she joined Children’s Wisconsin’s Orthopedics Department as an NP.

During her time at Children’s, Duey-Holtz has served as the Lead APP in Orthopedics, as well as participated in several orthopedic research projects. She also worked closely with Children’s collaborative co-management medical team, hospital medicine and complex care partners to develop a co-management program to help improve postoperative outcomes for patients with medical complexities who undergo major musculoskeletal procedures.

Leading future APPs
Outside of patient care, Duey-Holtz plays a significant role in developing and training APPs at Children’s. She helped develop an Advanced Practice Mentorship program that has successfully operated for a decade. She currently serves as a Children’s Specialty Group Assistant Director responsible for the development and implementation of the Advanced Practice Provider Centralized Pediatric Fellowship, launched in 2022. This fellowship helps APPs gain a year of clinical experience and professional expertise across a range of pediatric specialties.
