Children’s Wisconsin partners with Waukesha school district to provide athletic training

The Sports Medicine Program at Children’s Wisconsin has signed a partnership with the Waukesha school district to provide licensed athletic training and care for the Waukesha North, Waukesha South and Waukesha West high schools’ athletic teams. This is the first agreement the Children’s Wisconsin Sports Medicine Program has made with a school district. 

“Students benefit a lot from sports, not just physically, but socially and emotionally, too. Supporting student athletes is a passion of our Sports Medicine Program and we are excited to share our expertise at Waukesha schools,” said Kevin Walter, MD, program director, Children’s Wisconsin Primary Care Sports Medicine Program. 

Through the partnership, a Children’s Wisconsin licensed athletic trainer will provide athletic training room hours and athletic event sideline coverage. Athletic training room hours will be Monday through Friday from approximately 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. The daily hours will be used for injury evaluation, rehabilitation, taping, bracing, health education and other sport-related needs.

During athletic event sideline coverage, the athletic trainers will evaluate injuries, administer concussion protocols and respond to any other emergencies. Additionally, Children’s Wisconsin physicians will provide sideline coverage for varsity football games and our sports medicine specialists will be available to all student-athletes for consultation if the licensed athletic trainer believes further medical evaluation is needed.

Children’s Wisconsin is in the process of hiring the licensed athletic trainers that have served these three schools over the last two decades. 

“Once the hiring process is complete, we look forward to providing continuity of care while integrating Children’s Wisconsin’s culture, standard of care, programs and services,” said Dr. Walter. 

The partnership begins immediately for the 2020-2021 school year.
