Endoscopic neurosurgery
What is endoscopic neurosurgery?
Endoscopic surgery is a type of minimally invasive procedure that uses an endoscope, which is a small steerable camera, along with special instruments designeed to work with the endoscope to operate on deep areas of the brain or spine. This allows neurosurgeons to access hard-to-reach areas that are difficult to access via traditional surgery, as well as to minimize the size of the incision and to lessen the impact to areas around the surgical location.
What are the benefits of endoscopic neurosurgery?
Because endoscopic surgery requires smaller incisions than traditional surgery, it provides many advantages:
- Less pain
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster recovery after surgery
- Improved cosmetic results
In general, endoscopic surgery is just as effective as traditional surgery in achieving positive outcomes.
What are the different types of endoscopic neurosurgery?
Endoscopic neurosurgery is offered for a variety of conditions, including but not limited to:
Who is eligible for endoscopic surgery?
While endoscopic surgery is often a preferred option, and typically achieves similar outcomes to traditional surgery, it is not an option in every case. Eligibility is dependent on a variety of factors, including diagnosis, surgical location, age, prior surgeries, etc. Your child’s neurosurgeon will present and discuss all available options to you and your child based on your specific situation.
