Fetal Concerns Center opens new state-of-the-art clinic

As a nurse at Children’s Wisconsin for the past 18 years, I’ve had the honor of helping to care for babies and moms before birth at our Fetal Concerns Center. Our team provides comprehensive, collaborative care for mothers with high-risk pregnancies to help ensure that moms and babies receive the best care for their complex conditions.

This June, we proudly opened the doors to our new Fetal Concerns Center space on the second floor of Children’s Wisconsin.

With 18 years of success behind us, we are excited to welcome families from all over Wisconsin and beyond to this state-of-the-art space. The Fetal Concerns Center is the only center of its kind in the state to offer expectant mothers with high-risk pregnancies and fetal anomalies comprehensive, collaborative care from Children’s Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin specialists all in one convenient location.

Comprehensive care in one place

Founded in 2000, the Fetal Concerns Center specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and care coordination for women with high-risk pregnancies. The majority of these women have babies who require surgery and/or treatment following birth.

Diagnoses often seen at the Fetal Concerns Center include but are not limited to congenital heart disease, spina bifida, club foot, cleft lip/palate and Down syndrome. The center has seen a 45 percent increase in patients over the last four years.

State-of-the-art technology

The new 7,337-square-foot clinic, located within Children’s Wisconsin just across the hall from the Herma Heart Institute, includes five consultation rooms and six exam rooms, where ultrasounds and echocardiograms are performed. The new space offers convenience for families and better accommodates the innovation, growth and success of our nationally leading program.

The Fetal Concerns Center is also just steps away from Wisconsin’s largest Level IV (highest level) NICU, the state’s only Level I (highest level) pediatric surgery center and Froedtert’s high-risk birth center — ensuring moms and babies can be under the same roof when they need special care.

Highly specialized care

Our physician leadership team is made up of neonatologists, maternal fetal medicine specialists, fetal and pediatric surgeons, fetal cardiologists, pediatric neurosurgeons and fetal imaging specialists. This team is backed by top-ranked specialists in genetics, cardiology, neurosciences, neonatology, surgery, urology and more. My colleagues and I work with families on a case-by-case basis to provide individualized care, and families are also supported by fetal care coordinators and fetal heart coordinators, who serve as the single point of contact for the family throughout the entire care process.
