Esophageal dilation
A long flexible camera is used to treat a narrowing or obstruction in the esophagus (food pipe). This procedure requires your child to be fully asleep with a breathing tube.
The camera can be used to help guide a flexible balloon across the narrowing which is briefly inflated and then deflated to stretch the tight area. The camera can also be used to place a long guide-wire into the stomach to help guide long silicone tubes of different sizes down the esophagus to stretch the narrowing.
This procedure can also be used to stretch the bottom muscle of the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter to treat achalasia. Related conditions:
- Eosinophilic esophagitis
- Esophageal achalasia
- Motility disorders
- Swallowing disorders
- Tracheoesophageal fistula and esophageal atresia
- Dysphagia
