Inpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy services

The inpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy teams at Children's Wisconsin provide care to children staying in our hospitals (Milwaukee and Fox Valley) within our inpatient care units, including our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), to help patients in their recovery and ensure that they can return home safely following their injury or illness.

Conditions we treat:

We help patients who may be in the hospital while recovering from surgery, trauma, illness, or who are undergoing treatment for acute, chronic or complex medical conditions. Our staff are trained to treat a variety of pediatric medical conditions including but not limited to patients with diagnosis in the following areas:

  • Traumatic injury including burns, fractures, brain injury
  • Post-surgical and critical care for orthopedic, cardiac, neurologic, oncologic, neuroscience, pulmonary, gastro-intestinal, and genetic conditions
  • Neonatal and fetal concerns

Treatment:

Treatment is specialized to the needs of each patient based on their diagnosis, assessment, current and prior level of function as part of a multidisciplinary care team and may include the following:

  • Gait, balance and functional mobility training
  • Positioning, ergonomics, and postural alignment
  • Strength and range of motion exercises
  • Splinting, casting, and orthotics
  • Endurance and conditioning
  • Activities of daily living
  • Gross and fine motor developmental activities
  • Airway clearance techniques
  • Education, care coordination, and discharge planning
