What is a home ventilator with a mask?

Some children and teenagers that have trouble breathing when they sleep need to use a ventilator with a mask (non-invasive ventilation) instead of a CPAP machine or BiPAP™ machine. A ventilator is an advanced machine with extra features, like a battery and alarms. Some of the reasons your doctor may prescribe a non-invasive ventilator are:

  • Too small or young to use a CPAP or BiPAP machine
  • Severe lung disease
  • Severe central sleep apnea
  • The need for a battery in the event of a power outage
  • Advanced ventilator modes or settings
  • The need for day time mouthpiece ventilation
