Common pediatric sports medicine injuries

Our sports medicine professionals are uniquely qualified to care for many different conditions, including:

  • ACL injuries
Young athletes often suffer from knee injuries, and one of the most common is a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).
  • Concussions
A concussion is a brain injury that usually is caused by a direct blow to the head or face, like a sports injury or a bad fall from a bike. Many concussions are mild, but all concussions should be evaluated by a doctor.
  • Dislocations
When two connected bones separate, a dislocation of the ligament occurs.
  • Fractures (broken bones)
Treating broken bones in children is different than in adults. Kids' bones are more flexible, so when they break, the fracture patterns aren't the same as you would see in an adult's bones.
  • Heat-related illnesses
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures leave children at risk for several heat-related illnesses.
  • Overuse conditions
An overuse injury results from using an area of the body too much, like playing sports that continually stress the knees or shoulders.
  • Sprains and strains
Sprains and strains are common injuries among young athletes. Sprains are injuries to the ligaments, while strains are injuries to muscles or tendons.
  • Throwing injuries
Athletes of any age can suffer from throwing injuries, but these injuries are especially harmful to children because they are still growing. Throwing injuries can harm children’s bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and most often occur in the shoulders and elbows.
