Dance medicine program
The demands on a young dancer’s body are different than those of other athletes, and can lead to distinct injuries that require specialized care. The dance medicine program at Children’s Wisconsin is a multi-disciplinary clinic within the sports medicine program. It is a collaboration between our experienced sports medicine physicians, licensed athletic trainers, sports physical therapists, sports psychologist and sports nutritionist focused on providing the most comprehensive care to the young dancer.
Our multi-disciplinary approach focuses on the whole dancer – both physically and mentally – to get them back into the studio and performing as safely as possible. We tailor our care to meet the footwear, flexibility, positioning and strength needs specific to dancers. We treat dancers of all backgrounds – from classical ballet, jazz, Irish, lyrical, tap, competitive dance and more.
Your first visit
At the initial visit, your child will be evaluated by our clinical team - including a medical provider and a licensed athletic trainer. Your child's evaluation begins with a comprehensive history and medical exam with a licensed athletic trainer and a sports medicine provider. The team will gather information about your child's style(s) of dance, dance shoe wear, training volume, competition schedule, injury history and current medical concerns. Depending on the current injury, imaging may be ordered. We will educate you and your child on the best treatment plan based on their diagnosis.
Subsequent visits will take place with one of our physical therapists who specialize in working with dancers. Your child's physical therapist will assess their flexibility, strength, balance and movement patterns. The physical therapist will then prescribe a treatment program tailored to your child to facilitate their return to dance. Additional goals of the physical therapy plan of care include: addressing possible contributing factors to your child's current injury and teaching injury prevention strategies.
Additionally, we can coordinate visits with our sports psychologist or one of our sports nutritionists if we need to address the mental and nutritional aspects of recovery to optimize dance performance.
